Associate Professor Dr. Hassan Mahmoud Abuhassna
Educational Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Education | Academic Leadership | Digital and Distance Education

Dr. Hassan Mahmoud Abuhassna is an Associate Professor of Educational Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Education at UCSI University, Malaysia. My research focuses on harnessing AI and digital technologies to enhance the quality of education and broaden access to learning while safeguarding academic integrity, equity, privacy, and human judgement.

My research interests include responsible AI in education, online and distance learning, instructional design, learning analytics, digital pedagogy, and systematic literature reviews.

Alongside research and publication, I supervise postgraduate and doctoral students and support researchers and educational institutions in transforming promising ideas into rigorous studies and impactful publications. I also deliver professional training in systematic reviews, PRISMA methodology, bibliometric analysis, VOSviewer, research methods, academic writing, and the responsible use of AI in scholarly research.

Here, I share what academic profiles rarely reveal: the thinking that precedes research, the revisions that refine it, the rejection that redirects it, and the perseverance that ultimately leads to meaningful scholarly achievement.

I welcome international research collaborations, doctoral supervision opportunities, academic invitations, and institutional partnerships.

Research Vision and Academic Leadership

Career and Experience

I hold a PhD in Educational Technology from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). I began my academic career at UTM, where I was involved in teaching and research in educational technology. I later joined Sunway University as an Associate Professor, taking on both academic and leadership responsibilities. UCSI University marks the current chapter of my journey, where I continue to advance my work in AI in education, digital learning, and research capacity building.

My experience includes supervising master’s and doctoral students, serving as an external examiner, contributing to peer review and editorial activities, delivering academic talks and keynote addresses, participating in international conferences, and providing consultancy and professional development workshops for researchers, educators, and institutions.

Scholarly Contribution and Capacity Building

My scholarly contributions include research published in journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, edited books, international book chapters, systematic reviews, bibliometric studies, and collaborative research projects.

Beyond publication, I support researchers in transforming their ideas into rigorous studies and impactful scholarly work. I also deliver training in systematic reviews, PRISMA methodology, bibliometric analysis, VOSviewer, research methods, academic writing, publication strategies, and the responsible use of AI in research and education.

Across my platforms, I share what academic profiles rarely reveal: the thinking that precedes research, the revisions that refine it, the rejection that redirects it, and the perseverance that transforms an idea into a meaningful scholarly contribution.

I believe the true value of technology lies not in replacing people, but in expanding their capacity to learn, think, and create. I am an Associate Professor of Educational Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Education at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts, UCSI University, Malaysia. My academic journey brings together research, academic leadership, postgraduate supervision, programme development, research capacity building, and international collaboration.

Research Vision

My vision is to help shape an educational future in which artificial intelligence is used responsibly, humanely, and based on evidence. My work goes beyond exploring what technology can do; it examines where it should be used and how it can enhance educational quality without compromising equity, privacy, academic integrity, creativity, or human judgement.

My research focuses on responsible AI in education, online and distance learning, instructional design, learning analytics, digital pedagogy, microlearning, and technology-enhanced higher education environments. I am also interested in developing educational frameworks and models that help institutions move from experimental uses of technology towards informed, sustainable, and institution-wide adoption.

Academic Leadership

My philosophy of academic leadership centres on empowering others, connecting research with practice, and creating environments in which students, researchers, and faculty members can grow together. I previously served as Deputy Dean for Employability and Alumni Relations and led the Master of Education in Open and Distance Learning programme at Sunway University. Through these roles, I contributed to programme development, student support, partnership building, and the creation of pathways connecting academic learning with professional skills and the practical needs of society.

Today, I continue this work at UCSI University through teaching, research, supervision, training, and support for initiatives that bring together educational innovation and academic responsibility.
